The cookies were fine. The lemon bars were fine. Carla had been up since one in the morning making sure.

It's an hour before the bake sale and Carla is running the church kitchen like a launch. Debbie teases her about the cookies she made alone at 1 a.m. Erica says the spread looks wonderful. Carla is certain it isn't enough, that somebody's allergy is going to be her fault, and that all of it will reflect on the church.

Then Pam asks her what she's actually afraid of.

SYNOPSIS

In The Bake Sale Breakdown, Carla finally admits what's underneath the clipboard: she's afraid of what one mistake would say about her faith and her leadership. Pam reads 2 Corinthians 3:4 and 5 aloud and asks whether Carla has ever actually believed it. Carla says that's the hard part, which is the most honest line in the skit.

Then Debbie tells on herself about the time she accidentally taught the men's Bible study, and the whole kitchen laughs, Carla included. The gluten-free banana bread burns. Nobody panics. Carla says she's been baking more fear than muffins, Erica quotes Jeremiah 17:7, and they open the doors under a sign offering cookies and grace.
